A mountain is a landform of the earth’s surface that rises
high above its surroundings. Mountains are formed due to the movements of tectonic
plates of the earth’s crust. Mountains are majestic landforms of nature. They are formed in different ways and are
made up of different kinds of rocks and they are different in their sizes and their structures.
Mountains are spectacular with beautiful landscapes; they are massive,
with steeply sloping sides and rugged surfaces. Some are beautiful low, rolling
hills and some have high snow-capped peaks.

A mountain range consists of groups of mountains together,
and mountain ranges linked together forms the mountain system. Some mountains have
a number of peaks and are joined by ridges. The canyons separate the ridges through which streams
flow. The mighty mountains are majestic in view, found on the land and in
oceans too. The tallest mountain Mauna Kea is located on the island of Hawaii;
about half of this mountain is underwater.

Mountains have a great effect on plants, animals and people. They affect climate, vegetation and the migration of people and animals. Mountains have a huge influence on civilization; they change histories and forms barriers for
different regions and cultures. Mountains affect climatic conditions and
obstruct trading and transportation systems. The rocky terrains,
steep slopes of mountains and cold weather make travelling difficult. The
main factor for the vegetation on the mountains is the rainfall. They provide a livelihood
for millions of people on the planet. Life on mountains are challenging,
animals face food scarcity, severe coldness and low oxygen levels. High winds,
infertile soil and glaring lights make it difficult for living beings on the
mountains, and yet many animals survive living in mountain areas.

Some of the animals that live in mountains are moose, mule deer, pronghorn, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, elk, black bear, grey wolf, white-tailed deer, chiru, kiang, Yak, etc. Mountian animals have thick fur to protect themselves from extreme climatic conditions. They have special hooves that help them to climb the rocky mountains.
